Santa Caterina Cloister in Palermo & Cannoli Workshop: Art, History, and Culinary Tradition

In Palermo’s historic center, just a short walk from Bellaroto Suite & SPA, there is a place where architectural beauty, religious history, and culinary tradition come together in a unique experience: the Cloister of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria and its famous cannoli workshop.

A jewel of history and culture

The Church and Monastery of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria are among Palermo’s most fascinating religious complexes. Founded in the 14th century for Dominican nuns, the building is now open to visitors as a museum of sacred art and monastic history.

The inner cloister, with its porticoes and elegant arches, is an intimate and evocative space where Mediterranean light plays with shadows, offering the perfect setting for a slow, contemplative stroll.

The Secrets of the Cloister: a workshop for the senses

Inside the ancient monastery, the project “I Segreti del Chiostro” revives the convent’s pastry tradition, recreating recipes handed down by cloistered nuns for centuries.

Here, the old convent pastry kitchen has been reopened, filling the air with the aroma of cinnamon, fresh ricotta, and crisp pastry.

The production includes crispy ricotta-filled Sicilian cannoli, cassata, minne di Vergine, and traditional biscuits, all prepared following historical techniques preserved for hundreds of years by the nuns.

The cannolo: a dessert with history

The Sicilian cannolo is a symbol of the island’s pastry tradition. At Santa Caterina, it becomes even more special: not just a dessert, but a centuries-old tradition. Originally prepared in convent kitchens for festive occasions, it uses local ingredients and techniques passed down from generation to generation.

Today, visitors can enjoy fresh cannoli, with crisp shells filled on the spot and creamy sheep ricotta highlighting the flavor—an authentic experience connecting the present to Palermo’s long history.

A multi-sensory experience

Visiting the Santa Caterina Cloister immerses guests in a dimension where art, spirituality, and taste merge. Walking among the cloister arches, enjoying the calm of the historic spaces, and then sitting down to savor a traditional cannolo under citrus trees is the perfect way to complete a day exploring Palermo.

For guests of Bellaroto Suite & SPA, this itinerary is ideal after a morning spent visiting historic monuments, or before returning to the suite to relax in the private spa and enjoy the boutique comfort offered by the property.
